Hire Car Cover – do you need it?

If your vehicle is damaged as a result of an accident or theft, have you considered how you will get around while you await repairs?

Did you know the average wait time for repairs is approximately 3 months locally?

Some insurers offer additional benefits such as hire car following a not-at fault accident or theft but certainly not all do; And no insurer offers hire car following an at fault accident unless you have specifically selected this option. So adding hire car to your policy should be considered.

When deciding if you need hire car cover added to your motor policy, think about how long you could live without your car; Do you need your car to get to work? Do you need your car for school/childcare drop-off or kids’ activities? Can you access a car through other means?

While some insurers include cover for a rental car until your claim is settled, others restrict it to several days, usually between 14 and 30 days, and often a capped amount per day between $50 and $100.

There are large differences between what cover is provided depending on whether:

  • your car gets stolen
  • you have an accident and are not at fault
  • you have an accident and are at fault

No doubt any time your vehicle is off the road it is inconvenient, image just how inconvenient it will be if you do not have access to a vehicle during this time?
